Saturday – lemon

Saturday – Physiology of psychology – Lemon Oil (room 2)

Pinene, citronellol and citronellal in the lemon oil has been shown to induced anxiolytic and antidepressant like effects by modulating GABAnergic, serotonergic, and dopamininergic systems of the brains, caused by a suppression of DA activity via enhanced 5-HTnergic neurons (Komia et al., 2006; Aoshima and Hamamoto, 1999). These are all chemicals that make us feel happy, contented or stimulated. We expected people to be attracted to this room.

Result
This smell worked like magic. This gave the largest percentage of happy and contented responses, and more people picked this room as the most positive room, than on any other day.

I came on Saturday and definitely did feel happier afterwards due to the ‘feeling’ when the second room and chose ‘happy’on the card. I had no idea it was smell, thought it may have been subliminal sounds or other stimulus.

We were slightly thrown by the bowl in the second room having been accidentally tilted at an angle and this made us think it might be to do with the lessening of the strange effect created when looking into the reflective bowl. Nevertheless it completely worked!

    Fascinating work!
